Free Screensaver: Old Comic Book Ads
June 14th, 2007 by bweber
A recent entry on BoingBoing about the glory of old comic book ads reminded me that Web Master Mike and I put together a screen saver of them. (Now that I think about it, the screen saver was my idea and Mike did all the work.)
This was an early effort, dating back to 2000? 2001? Who knows any more. Regardless, Mike’s work still holds up.
Download and install, put on your X-Ray specs, cuddle up with your chinchillas and watch the magic!

Why is the .exe an encrypted archive? What is there to hide? what is the password?

Not sure why it’s coming up as an encrypted file for you. The file was zipped by Mike to make it faster to up/download. All you should have to do is download it, open it, and 2x-click to install. This process has been verified before posting and before sending the info to BoingBoing.
There is no password. There is nothing to hide.
Good luck. Let me know if things work out.

Pretty cool, though it would be awesome if it worked on dual monitors. Unfortunately it only shows on the primary monitor.
One other thing would be awesome….it reading from a collection of images. I’ve got a few comics from the 70’s and 80’s that I only care about for the ads in them, and would love to add to this. The ads are for things like original Atari games and first edition boxed set of Dungeons & Dragons.

Thanks for the comments and link-backs, everybody!
Heard from Gomisan. The screen saver installed fine once he ignored Windows and ran the “dangerous” .exe file.
Silly Windows.
Greg — not sure if there’s a way to generate the saver on multi screens. Great idea though. If this screen saver generates enough interest, we may be doing others. We’ll keep you posted.

I love it! I wish there was an option to slow it down though.

mac os x users have it easier. download all the images into a folder, and point the screensaver preference panel to it.

every time I try to run it I get a message that says the process cannot open the file because it is being used by another process. that’s a stink!
